Allergic rhinitis and asthma

Hi, I'm about 5 weeks pregnant for the first time, just wondering if anyone has got any experience of taking steroid inhaler and antihistamines during pregnancy? Is there more chance of causing health problems for baby? Thanks x

  • You should continue to take your asthma inhalers. I was told it was more dangerous to the baby if I stopped taking them. You need to keep yourself breathing well.
Antihistamines are not generally allowed in pregnancy. If you really think you need them you should see your dr to find out what ones are safest.
  • Thanks for the reply, I have spoken to my GP and an ENT specialist, it's difficult to gauge because everyone has conflicting views. The advice is usually to continue the asthma inhaler but the views on antihistamines are up in the air. Was just wondering if anyone had any experience? I am currently taking my inhaler and cetirizine hydrocholoride tablet every other day but thinking of stopping the antihistamine in my first trimester to see how I get on.
  • I’ve just been told by my doctor to stay away from all antihistamines but I can continue taking my inhaler and steroid nasal spray
