Possible miscarriage

My wife and I were elated to find out we were pregnant . She had recently come off of birth control and had not yet had her first period. She took a pregnancy test on March 25th and it was positive! On Monday April 20th she had an ultrasound and the tech informed her that she was unable to find a gestational sac or yolk. They did bloodwork to determine her hcg. Her hcg that day was 30,000 . 48 hours later her hcg was 41,000. They scheduled another scan for this morning April 27th and were able to see a gestational sac, yolk and embryo but no fetal heartbeat... the doctor informed her that the pregnancy is not likely viable. But they also told her that the embryo is only measuring at 6 weeks and one day. She got pregnant immediately after coming off of birth control before having her first period. So other than the positive pregnancy test we really don’t have any other dates to go by. But they seem convinced that she is at least 7 weeks. She said that the gestational sac is too small and long (mis shaped). She asked her if she would rather have a d&c or take medication if the pregnancy is in fact not viable. She did order another US for this Friday but told her not to get her hopes up. Has anyone ever experienced this ? What was the outcome ?
