Does anyone know what a mastoid abscess is?

Hi,
Just had text from good friend saying her 18 month old is in hospital and has just had surgery for a mastoid abbcess. Does anyone know what this is?

Sounds pretty scary as he is now on intravenous antibiotics!!!

Any info gratefully appreciated, would like to know what it is before I give her a call...

    Thanks Becs - Did google it but got loads of technical stuff, think its something to do with your inner ear and that sort of area... just wanted an idea of how bad it was as my mate (bless her) is inclined to be completely neurotic about things at the best of times (not that I wouldn't if it was Sarah but...) so thought if I had a bit of info I could perhaps help calm her down or console her but looks like they are still in hosp!!
