Baby hayfever? Anyone?

Has anyone's lo got hayfever?

My lo is 14 months and has had a nasty runny nose for a couple of weeks now combined with a cough. The doctor at first gave her Amoxycillin for the nose as he said she had cattarrh. It didn't really clear up so we took her back again (different doctor who I hasten to add is crap!) and this time she was prescribed cough medicine and a ventolin inhaler.

She has previously had ventolin syrup as she always seems to have chest problems but to be honest I have rarely had to give it to her. I'm really not keen on giving her the ventolin, the doctor has prescribed the same dosage that I take as an adult which doesn't seem right to me!

Anyhoo, I'm not convinced by any of the above and NONE of it has cleared up her runny nose and cough.

Today we went in to the garden and within minutes she had an absolute fit, I have no idea what about, and cried until i took her indoors. So i thought that i would take her for a walk instead (in the buggy). Lo is generally a happy child and has never ever caused a fuss when we are out, no crying or strops etc until now. We were out for less than 5 minutes and she started screaming and rubbing her eyes. She wouldn't open them and was really upset, streaming nose aswell. Suffice to say i turned around and bought her straight home and gave her some Piriton, I bought it the other day on a hunch after having tried everything else! She was fine 10 minutes after coming home and having the piriton.

Sorry for rambling!!! Just wondered if anyone's lo had these symptoms or any experience of hayfever in a young child as I know it's quite rare! I'm thinking of taking her back AGAIN to the docs to see if I can maybe get some allergy testing?

  • my lo started hayfever meds last spring at around 16 monoths, i found his symptoms started around the same time as mine, this year we are exactly the same, my gp thinks im just trying to find a reason for his runny nose and itchy eyes but mine are exactly the same. so but on piriton for his and eye drops nasal spray and tablets for me. may be suggest hayfever as a possible diagnosis and ask if you could try meds for a week and see if they work.
  • Not sure but i see allergy specialist for my sons nut allergy. He said that eczema/nut allergy/asthma/hay fever are all linked. And they appear in that order with hay fever being at about 9 years. I asked about toddlers having it and he said no. . . . .

Piriton is quite strong so i would be careful using it for long periods without Dr or pharmacists advice.

    Good luck

  • Well she has 3 out of the 4 at the moment I think, asthma diagnosed at about 10 months or there abouts. Funnily enough my husband and I have been discussing that she appears to have developed patches of excema? She has a strange patch on the side and back of her neck and patches on her tummy, I only say they are excema as they seem similar to the occasional patches that I get (I also have asthma and hayfever!). Maybe yet another trip to the docs is needed, I seem to be there once a week I might just make a regular weekly appointment and be done with it lol!
