Bilingual parents - Bilingual toddler?

Hello! I am a bilingual mother (English and French).

I wonder if other parents are teaching their children to speak two languages at a very young age. How do you do it? from what age? What is your opinion on this?

My son is 13 months old and we speak to him mainly in French (we are in France). We will be moving to Canada in a few years so he will need his English.

Let me know what you think ;)

Thanks,

Champignounette

  • I'm fluent in Irish Gaelic but my partner isn't so my one year old will have to learn both.  When my partner is home from work, we only speak English but when I'm alone with her, I speak Irish to her and her grandparents speak Irish to her.  We're in an Irish speaking community so literally everyone speaks Irish.  It will be interesting to see how it all pans out but I do think she will be more dominant in English first because she hears it more often.
  • We're from the Philippines but my son's main language is English. Recently, we started teaching him Tagalog (Filipino dialect) and I could see him catch up easily. He talks to us in English but sometimes he mixed in a few Tagalog words.

I don't see anything wrong with teaching kids two languages at an early age. In fact, I think it's a perfect time to take advantage since they learn easily.
