22 months old screaming in pain waited 5 hours in A&e

The title says it all ,really.Pepi woke last night in midnight screaming in agony and crying that her ear hurt.Given Calpol, was violantly sick everywhwere. No improvement after 2 hours, inconsolable crying,so we went to hospital.Waited 5 bloody hours in the main reception area with adults, drunks, criminal ascorted by police before seen by a doctor despite the fact we were given red card on the arrivarl becouse lo was so disstreesssed.By that time she screamed herself to sleep.while we waited ans she screamed she was very sick twicw all over us.Doctor was very nice, alone on duty, confirmed her middle ear was badly inflamed, given antibiotics.I am just so upset, why no priroty is given to a little child. If it was me I would happily let smaall child go ahead of me,especially distressed as she was.Although they did not even offer any pain relef, for the time waitting,it was horrible.I am just so down I want to move out of London now somewhere nice ang quiet where it would not happen.

  • Awww, poor Pepi how awful for her. Ear infections can be so painful. I agree children should be given priority if they are really suffering. I wouldn't complain if a lo went in before me. I can't believe it was a 5 hour wait for you, it's disgraceful. Esp when most of the people in there had probably just had too mcuh to drink :x

Hope Pepi feels better soon hun.xxx
  • How awful. At our local A&E the kids have a separate area to the adults.

At least she could tell you that her ear hurted her so you knew what it was. I know that doesn't really help with what you went thru at the hospital.

Hope she gets much better soon. There seems to be a lot of bugs around at the moment.
  • hi hun so sorry to hear that, don't believe you had to wait that long, hope she gets better soon xx
  • 5 hours that is terrible! did they give any advice for next time? in the past we have phoned NHS helpline or the emergency out of hours dr. if we see the out of hour doctor it is usually quicker and on the 2 times we have then also needed to go to hospital we have been admitted straight on to the ward. is there a 24 hour unit near you or does your dr have an out of hours number?
I hope your lo is feeling better now, it must have been so distressing for you to see her in such agony and having to wait so long. fancy only having one dr on and not even having a nurse or someone that could have helped you. especially on a saturday night!
  • How awful. Was that Whipps Cross? They have a really bad reputation for their A& E. The only time I've been there with Beth they were much better than that, but it was a weekday morning so I guess the timing makes a real difference. Hope Pepi is starting to feel better- you must all be exhausted.
  • That's terrible. Poor Pepi, I really hope she is feeling better soon and that you all manage to get a good nights sleep tonight.x
  • Thank u all for your kind replies. She is asleep now,was much better today. So hopefully she will sleep Ok and the worst is behind us.Yes,Poz,it was Whipps Cross,it really is horrible. But where else can we go?We only been living here for 18 months having moved from lee because of hubbies work and when i think of our old hospital there i want to cry. There is no way im giving birth at whipps cross(we are trying for number 2 now). The doctor thuogh was very nice .Thank u all again.
  • Oh how horrible for you and Pepi, hospitals are not nice at the best of times but with a distressed toddler in a lot of pain must have been so awful for you.
I hope she gets better soon. xxx
  • God I think if I had to wait 5 hours with a screaming upset child, i might be one of those criminals being escorted by police as not sure i could be responsible for my huge tantrum!!

That truly is awful that you had to wait 5hrs with a screaming upset child, hope she's feeling much better now. x
  • Ahh that's horrid, hope she's getting much better it must have been so painful for her.

We are very lucky here, we have a children's A&E which is seperate from the adult one and its a godsend, last time we were there we'd gone from the GP who phoned ahead and we literally walked strait in they were actually waiting for us I was really surprised, had been expecting to be there for ages
  • It is totally disgusting, last year my ds was having alot of problems with his arms, we took him to a&e and waited for nearly 7 hours, to be told that his arm was broken. There was also a little boy who came in at the same time as us and had just been given his xray as we left and he had broken his hip, so been sat in a packed waiting room all that time and he was only about 18 months bless him.
Thankfully my hospital has a special area just for kids, with toys ect but the waiting time are always ridiculous. I wouldnt mind, we foun out later on he hadn't even broken his arm, he had a condition that caused his arms to disconnect. x
  • thats awful! your poor lo, glad thats he is on the mend now though.
our local hospital has a seperate waiting area for children sothey dont have to wait out with the drunks, there is also a doctor appointed to the children so you get seen much quicker. i think that this should be the case fo rall hospitals, its really not on to keep a distressed child waiting for 5 hours! xx
  • We too have a childrens A&E-thankfully although I have been there myself many times as I am so accident prone, touch wood my LO has not needed to go.

That really is awful that you had to wait 5 hours, poor baby not knowing why she had to wait so long that's awful. Hope she's feeling better soon xx
