  • I never really went back to drinking after I mc. Probably drink once or twice a month. Fat lot of good it’s done for my fertility!

Ooh, I’ve just noticed you got married on my birthday!!

  • Oh really?  Cool!!!

Daresay it can't hurt to cut back

  • I don't drink much anyway but I would probably cut back if I did drink a lot and was TTC.

  • I don't drink loads - maybe a couple of glasses of wine per weekend night (although obviously more this last week!) but I can't say I have conciously cut down, I wouldn't drink after getting a BFP and maybe if we haven't had any luck in a few months of trying I would reduce further but I don't think it's a massive concern for me at the moment. Id does depend on how much and how regularly you drink though I would say

  • I try to cut back to almost nothing on the 2ww and just limit my consumption to sensible amounts the rest of the time.  I was going to go cold turkey right from the off but then I was getting so het up about it all I decided that I would just relax and drink when I fancied it.  Not sure if it's the right way to approach it or not, but I figure that my life will change so much when I do fall pg that there is no need to go through the TTC part being stressed over what I should or shouldn't be eating or drinking at any given time :)

  • I had no alcohol at all the whole time we were ttc BUT that's because I came down with flu before we ttc and was ill with that and secondary infections for weeks, including being on heavy duty antibiotics, so didn't want to drink. By the time we started ttc, I'd been off alcohol for almost 2 months.

As noone knows how long it will take to conceive, I don't think you can put your whole life on hold, and cold turkey on alcohol and all the foods you can't eat during pregnancy is probably unnecessary; that said, the official DoH guidance is that alcohol does affect fertility and generally if TTC, no alcohol at all is idea, or 1-2 units once or twice a week should be a maximum (hardly worth opening the bottle though, is it!)

Apparently it can have a harmful effect on sperm quality and quantity as well, but I bet not many men would be up for cutting out the booze!

  • Gillsy when I get home and go on my diet I won't be drinkin AT ALL :o mind you, I've done nothing but drink since the Glasgow meet!!

  • Good for you TT!!!!!

I try to get H to cut back on alcohol but its not happening.

  • It's caffeine that's my vice. I'm trying to cut down at the moment and it's making me incredibly ratty.

  • Im not a big drinker - maybe once or twice a month but I wouldnt abstain with the 2WW in mind.

I do try to eat healthily though and have cut back on coffee, fizzy drinks etc. I drink green tea in the mornings only and keep jam jars with water & fruit slices in the fridge instead!

  • I have always had the attitude that you have to carry on life as usual when TTC, and that includes the 2ww. I have never done anything differently in that time. Unless of course you are a huge binge drinker or similar but for the average few glasses of wine at the weekend type of person i don't think it makes a difference. I think there is research to suggest it has more of an impact on male fertility in terms of sperm quality.

When i conceived P it was immediately after a mc. Directly after the mc i drowned my sorrows in an awful lot of red wine and so probably drank more that cycle than any of the ones i didn't get pregnant in. We also had a couple of weddings and a hen night in that time too. She's turned out ok so far Wink

  • I'm not a big drinker, but when I have a session, I will drink quite a bit :s

For now, life goes on as normal, in fact the only thing I am doing now is taking my vitamins and trying to lose weight. Come the IVF month I will probably stop completely.

  • I don't drink a lot anyway, so no change for me. I too won't put things on hold whilst trying to conceive as I don't think you can live life like that. If I was a heavy drinker/smoker etc I'd cut that out but I'm pretty healthy with what I eat and drink anyhow, so I don't really see the need to change.

  • As you know from meeting me Gillsy I'm more interested in diet cola than I am alcohol. I always figure at least if/when the time comes that I'm trying to hide being pregnant my lack of drinking won't be the thing that gives me away!

  • We both did. After William died and following all his abnormalities my consultant advised no alcohol for me and for h not to drink round ov time and before and after Ov if  h was having a drink then it was not to exceed the recommended units. I know previously the girls who went to the recurrent mc specialist in London (no ideaof his name but lots went on old hitched) and they were told absolutely no alcohol/caffeine.

If I was just starting out then I'd carry in as normal my first 2 bfps were after heavy drinking sessions but after William we stopped all alcohol.

When we Ttc again neither if us will drink again
