Metformin Experience

Hi,

So 1 week later and I'm already thinking about putting my prescription in for Metformin and starting it.

July is the month we said we would start TTC, and I've had 2 AF's since February, no sign of next one.

I've only been prescribed for 12 weeks - if it works (regulates my cycle) do you think my doctor will prescribe more?

I've basically been given this and told no pregnancy by Feb we go to Fertility clinic.

- Does it mean anything if I start having regular cycles on Metformin?

Secondly, anyone have any tips - obviously heard about the side effects of the medication....

Is there anything I can do to ease these?

Thanks

  • i would always take it with food !

if you start having regular cycles on metformin, which is a possible effect. then fabulous, you can carry on with metformin until you fall pregnant. you can even take metformin during pregnancy !

  • Monnie, excuse my ignorance on this :( Why would you want to take Metformin during pregnancy? My specialist did mumble some stuff about the eggs being better quality etc when taking metformin... is it all tied into that?

  • it depends on the reason for prescribing the metformin

for instance i take it for insulin resistance so its important for me to carry in taking it.

what dose have you been prescirbed and what form?

for instance i was taking 1000mg a day then 1500 then 2000 and nothing happened other than being really ill.

then they changed me to glucophage wich is modified release metforming, straight on to 2000mg no side effects and im ovulating !

  • I've been prescribed 500mg for 1 week, then 2 x 500mg for 1 week, then 3x 500mg for 10 weeks.

Its just to help regulate my cycle - I had ammenhorea when younger, put on pill, came off pill in Feb and had 2 cycles, think they think my cycles may go back to being non-existent.

  • see how you go, everyone is different but i didnt see any changes to my cycles until i was changed to modified release, probably becasue the side effects of metformin were so bad i didnt take them haha
