Forum home Getting pregnant Trying to conceive

To test or not to test - that is the question!

My cycles vary and are a little unpredictable thanks to my endometriosis, but they have averaged 24 days since I had surgery back in July (occasionally, they can be as short as 21 days, but never as long as 28). AF has taken me by surprise a couple of times before, but usually I get really bad cramping and bloating (up a full dress size, if not more!) a day or two before I'm due. Today is day 24 since my last AF started, and nothing. A little cramping over the last few days, but no bloating and nothing like the pain that I normally get. I've got a pregnancy test upstairs, but I just have visions of it being negative and AF coming tomorrow. Torn between just testing now or putting it off until I'm a week late or something. I mean, we've only been trying a couple of months, and my gynae warned me that the endo could cause me real fertility problems. We can't have been that lucky, can we?

What do you girls think - should I test now, or should I leave it and wait a few more days?

  • Hi MR, I'd leave it a couple more days, but it depends how you feel about waiting. Some women prefer to test as the waiting drives them crazy. It's personal choice really!

    Good luck though! xx

  • I am one of those people that would like to know one way or the other so I'd test but really it's up to you! Would you rather know either way and see a bfn or wait a few more days in the hope af doesn't appear?

  • I'd  test as the not knowing and the wondering drove me mad and seeing a BFN at least stopped my mind going into overdrive for a while.

  • I think I would test as well if you have one, it would drive me crazy not knowing!  Good luck!

  • I ended up doing a test late last night. BFN :( But still no sign of AF this morning, and I don't even feel like it's anywhere close. No mega bad pains, eating everything in sight or massive depressive days like I normally have before AF. Been feeling a very little bit nauseous before breakfast the last few days, very tired, headachy and getting very light cramping, so not sure if it's my body trolling me or if it was too early to test/my hormone levels were too low. Bought a couple more tests so might test again if still no sign of AF by Sunday (although OH wants me to test again tomorrow).

  • Hi MR, only just catching up now - how are you getting on?

  • Hi Tayto. 6 days late now, still no sign of AF. OH swears blind that my boobs have got fuller and the nipple area has got darker, and they were aching and tingling all day on Friday. My appetite's really low and I keep feeling nauseous and stupidly tired. I've done 3 tests, all negative, but everyone I know was at least 1.5+ weeks late before they got a positive test result, so I'm going to test again next weekend and see what happens. If it's still negative, I'll head off to the GP for a blood test. Had to tell my parents, because I was in no mood for Sunday lunch today (plus I'm usually a caffeine fiend, so I had to explain to them why I was turning down the offer of a cup of tea), but keeping an open mind until I get that positive test.

  • Fingers crossed for you MR!

  • Fingers crossed x

  • Sad Bad news from me. Faint BFP on Monday, but woken up today with insane cramping pains and bleeding. OH did some googling and it looks like it was a chemical pregnancy - apparently very common with endo. Absolutely gutted. Taken today off work, partly because the pain is so bad (it's right down through my back and hips as well as my lower abs - I can barely move!) and partly because I keep crying and don't want people asking me what's wrong.

Trying to keep positive - at least now I can drink all the tea or alcohol that I want and OH can buy me the dress I wanted for Christmas (a design I've wanted for about three years) - but it's kind of hammered home to me just how many extra obstacles we might have with the endo.

  • I'm so sorry to read this MadamRed. Try to keep positive. You will get over these hurdles. X

  • So sorry to read this MadamRed, as MS says, try to keep positive. You will get there - we're all here for you if you need us xxx

I'd suggest contacting the specialist you saw about your endo - just to let him/her know as well.

  • So sorry to read this, as Tayto says let your specialist know and they might be able to help xx

  • Really sorry MadamRed. xx

  • So sorry MadamRed :( xxx

  • Sorry to hear this madam red.xx

  • Thanks for the kind messages, everyone. I had a call from my Mum this morning - she had a miscarriage at 10 weeks before she had me, so she gave me some advice about dealing with it. Feel a little better now.

Thanks, tayto. I've only seen a gynaecologist so far - I'm on a waiting list for an appointment with the endometriosis specialist in London. I'm going to mention it to them when I finally get the appointment. It must have been fate - those OPKs you sent me have just arrived in this morning's post! Thanks loads for sending them. Definitely going to need them now.

  • No problems at all MR & best of luck with the specialist x

  • So sorry MR, I hope that you get the specialist appointment soon, be kind to yourself xx

  • I'm so sorry, MR :( xxxx
