Just found out I have two mutations of MTHFR gene and wanted to share this

hey ladies! After having a chemical, my sister suggested I get tested for MTHFR gene mutations. Turns out I have one copy of the c677t and a1298c gene mutations.

So, how does this affect me? Well, not by much honestly. There’s just one tiny small thing that’s pretty huge....

DON’T TAKE FOLIC ACID. If you have these mutations, your body won’t process folic acid in it’s processed form (in most prenatal vitamins). I have to take natural prenantal vitamins now that have it as the folate form (methylenetetrahydrofolate).

I use mamabird brand, but it makes me nauseous so I may be switching.

Just wanted to share. I thought I was doing the right thing taking folic acid while we TTC, but I was actually hurting myself. Glad my sister suggested I get tested.

  • Hmmm this is interesting for me, I can't take folic acid because it just makes me ill (nausea, sickness, bloating etc) and read the other day that people who can't take it may carry the MTHFR gene. I'm not sure if I have it...but it's certainly came into my head now.
What did the doctor/specialists tell you to do? Just take natural prenatals and thats it? xx
  • Yes. He can prescribe it to you or you can buy them wherever, but it’s important not to take “folic acid” as the processed form. The natural form is folate, or methylhyxxxxxx (what I typed above haha).

But also, even in natural form it makes me sick. Surprisingly the processed form didn’t make me feel sick... but it was doing other damage I didn’t know. It never hurts to get tested for it if you’re TTC.
