Can you have a faint positive line while bleeding/spotting?! (Please help!)

Hi everyone,

I am brand new to this website and group chat, but I have been following in the shadows ever since my husband and I have been TTC since February 2019. I am hoping that someone can be kind enough to give me some insight as to whether or not am I pregnant after a recent turn of events that have occurred this weekend.

Just to offer up some back story, my husband and I have been TTC since February of this year. We have been married for over four years, and this will be our first child, so I have never been pregnant before. For these past 8 or so months, I have diligently tracked my cycle, marked the days when we had sex, and I purchased an ovulation kit from First Response so I could start tracking my ovulation. Over time, I felt more and more anxious and upset over, what to felt to me, like failures, so I reached out to my doctor about having us both tested this past August. My husband went to a fertility specialist and I had an ultrasound completed, and both tests returned completely fine. A couple of weeks ago, my doctor informed me that the next test we can try is a hysterosalpingography, which basically translates to the blue dye x-ray. I decided that if we are unsuccessful after this most recent cycle, I would try that, next.

Well, fast-forward to two weeks later, and I am on day 27 of my cycle, which is exactly when my cycle is due (I usually receive my period anywhere between day 22 and 27, so I would officially be late tomorrow). I decided to try and take a pregnancy test this morning, even though it has brought on feelings of frustration before, because something felt a little different this time around. I don't have any cramping that usually foreshadows my periods, and I feel absolutely exhausted, although to be fair, I am always exhausted, and the weather has been poor here lately. Well, I used a First Response Early Result test this morning, and I was so shocked to see a second, albeit very faint, pink line appear after only a few minutes! I have been so upset during the process of TTC, so you can imagine how excited we were to see the test; it felt like something straight out of movie scene because we were both hugging each other, and I was crying. Granted, I realize that it is very faint, and part of me does not want to get my hopes up, so I know I will have to test again in two days. But just seeing a second line and pictures online for comparison has given me hope.

However, fast-forward to a few hours later, I went to the restroom, and there was a little bit of blood when I wiped. Some of it was brownish-rustish colored, but at one point it was a little bright red. I tried not to worry, and I went about my day, and when I took frequent bathroom breaks, the blood was gone. However, I just went again, towards the end of the day, and again, there was a streak of rust colored blood. I am trying not to worry, but I can't help myself. Basically, my question is this; does anyone know if I am truly pregnant? The second line was definitely there, although again it was faint, so I am unsure of how to interpret it. I had assumed I was pregnant after that, so if the test is correct, could this be implantation bleeding, or do you think it is my period arriving since it could technically arrive still today? And should I call my doctor's office when they open tomorrow morning, or should I just wait it out and see what my test says again in two days? I plan to purchase two different brands this time to compare.

If anyone has anyone similar experiences, both good and bad, I would love to hear them while I wait anxiously. I am trying to keep my mind occupied as I watch and wait to retest by reading and grading papers (I am a teacher), but it isn't easy. Sorry for the long-winded story!

Thanks in advance!

    Hi again,

I guess I should have also mentioned that I am on day 27 of my cycle, and my ovulation kit gave me the smiley face on days 14 and 15, so I ovulated about 11-12 days ago.
  • It could very well be implantation. I would definitely test again in 2 days to see if the line has gotten darker. Also, use the same type of test, don’t get different brands. That will mess up you seeing if it’s getting darker if it’s a different brand. First response early response test are the best in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback, Rachel! First Response Early Response was the test I used this morning, so I'll try that one again tomorrow and Tuesday morning. I also purchased Clearblue First Response to compare, but I fear that may be driving me crazy...

Also, as an update, there is more blood there consistently when I wipe, so I have no idea what to think. I've been spending too much time online today, and I am afraid this could be a chemical pregnancy :( I am definitely going to call my doctor tomorrow.
  • I hope that everything turns out ok!!
  • Hi I had slight bleeding / spotting very very early on in my previous pregnancy. I had positive tests but I was so worried about having a miscarriage  that I asked for an early scan. However I had had to wait till I was 6 weeks. It turned out my baby was fine but there was another empty sac which means likely that it was twins and I lost one. How did it go for you today? Any updates? Good luck

    Hi all,

Just a general update; the last few days have been insane. On Sunday, the first day of my positive test, I had very very light spotting. I woke up Monday, the next day, and took another test, and this one came back even stronger as positive; but I started spotting even more. Then I noticed the left side of my pelvis was swollen, so my doctor sent me to the ER in case it was ectopic. Long story short, it is not ectopic, and the ER drew my blood and saw that I came back for a positive pregnancy, but since I am bleeding there is a chance this is a miscarriage. I had to stay home and rest for the past two days, and get my blood redrawn to compare the number this morning. I am waiting on the doctor to call back. If the numbers have risen, then it looks like a viable pregnancy; however, if they lower, then this is a miscarriage. I am not sure what to think because the bleeding has increased, but it still isn't like a regular period where I am filling a pad. The lady who drew my blood said this same thing happened to her during a pregnancy,, and now her baby is one, so I have some hope. But it's so hard today as I wait around for results and as I see more blood in the toilet when I use the restroom...I don't feel quite as optimistic as I once I did. Will keep you all updated. My regular doctor isn't in today, but the ER doctor said if that happens I can call him at 4 and he will try to give me the results.
  • Best of luck and stay positive. Hope it will turn out ok for you. Keep us posted x

Thanks for all the positive vibes and thoughts everyone. I just heard from the doctor a few hours ago, and it is definitely a miscarriage. My numbers are plummeting from 37 to 8...it is truly devastating, especially since this was our first successful attempt. Hopefully it works out better in the future...
  • I’m so sorry to hear that. It must be difficult but there is always hope for the next normal cycle :)
