Deficiency of Vitamin D can lead to a rickets (which if left untreated can be really serious), in other countries Vitamin D is being given to babies just to prevent this illness until they are at least one year old. I can't understand why doctors in this country are waiting for babies to develop this illness and only then start treatment? Rickets is a serious condition and if left unnoticed or untreated (or noticed but too late)can be hard to treat and leave a baby with bones more prone to fractures. Severe and prolonged rickets, if treated very late, can cause permanent bone deformities such as bow-legs and deformed chest.
One drop of Vitamin D can prevent this. So why risk?

Two of the lowest breast-feeding nations in the developed world (Japan and the Netherlands) also have the lowest cot-death rates.
Go figure!
Though dont expect anything short of a hostile response from breastfeeding associations when you bring this to their attention.
