Completely agree with Sarah. When the headline said 'totally unprepared celeb mum-to-be' I thought it meant she was about to give birth and hadn't a clue what to expect. At 34 weeks, the chances are she's still got plenty of time anyway.

I think there are certain things you need to be aware of and buy - or get somehow. Car seat to get home from hospital, if you're having your baby at hospital. Babygrows and newborn nappies. Nursing bra. special pads for post-birth bleeding. a place for your baby to sleep. a pram or baby carrier maybe. You need to know that it's handy to buy these early and not just expect to pop out as soon as your labour's over and pick these up at your local!

We agree you needn't be spending excessively before your baby arrives (or even after) and are always on the hunt for ways to save mums some cash. It's important to be aware of the things you'll need for your baby's arrival - especially as babies don't always get the memo about your due date! However, we know it's just as crucial for mums-to-be to know the things that can be left off the checklist to ensure the budget isn't blown.

This is one of the reasons why we created triple-checked baby preparation lists covering the essentials baby items, the very handy but not essential items, and products you can do without. We often call these 'buying' or 'shopping' checklists, knowing 'buying' and 'shopping' can be firsthand, secondhand or through friends passing things on. We known preloved baby gear can be a real budget-saver, and so have published practical secondhand buying advice for mums and mum-to-be.

We hope these make all the pre-birth prep easier, especially for any first-timers!

Ooh err - she better stock up on nappies and baby gros soon! Agree with lostinparenting - wether you are buying new, borrowing or gifted items you really should start to have a good idea of where baby is going to sleep, hospital bag items - surely her HV has already discussed this with her?

Nonsense to think you have to buy or spend loads before the baby arrives. Why is mfm encouraging this thinking in a time we should all be finding ways of limiting pointless purchases. Maybe she's got kind friends who will lend a Moses basket and you get so many clothes and so on as presents that it makes much more sense to wait till after the birth to stock up sensibly.
