Is it true that vitamin D can protect you from coronavirus? And even if it isn't, should we all be taking vitamin D supplements anyway? We look at the scientific evidence and get advice from expert GP Dr Philippa Kaye

We agree that there are scientists all over the world who are calling for more research into the role of vitamin D in protecting us from Covid-19 and also in treating those who are affected.
But we stand by what we said in our article: the current position of the UK's National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is that there is not yet enough evidence to recommend vitamin D supplements to prevent or treat Covid-19.
This may well change, as more evidence becomes available to NICE – in which case, we will update this article, of course.
That said, as we make clear, both NICE and our expert GP are recommending that we all supplement our diet with vitamin D at the moment anyway– for our general bone and muscle health.
So if it does turn out later that vitamin D supplements ARE in fact going to be recommended to to prevent (or treat)Covid-19, we'll probably all be taking them already!
