Diagnosing PCOS

Hi Ladies,
I've not posted here before though I do recognise some names from other forums. I have a fertility consultants appt with OH on thurs and I am positive I have PCOS (I show way too many symptoms....all apart from having regular periods, even though I don't always ovulate, strangely).
I was just wondering how many of you knew you had it before you were diagnosed, what were your symptoms and how did your consultant diagnose and what was the process??
Sorry for all the questions, I'm so scared of this appt and I'd really like to know what to expect.

i got diagnosed wiv pcos last yr ,i had a huge weight gain facial hair jus appeared,pigment changes in inner legs crease of next,skin tags dont b scared there is nothing to worry about a blood test gave an indication of myn so i was sent for ultrasound on my scan where it was confirmed i now dont see anybody because they cant help me with the facial hair which is my biggest problem

Thansk VFJ for replying. I certainly have some of the symptoms you mentioned, will just have to wait and see what they say now!
Are you on Clomid or anything? Is there really nothing they can do for the hair growth? That's the bit that I hate most too. xxx

Hi, just seen this.

i was diagnosed with pcos about 2 yrs ago but have know i have had it for about 5 yrs i guess... maybe longer?

my symptoms that lead to 'self diagnosis' was excess hair, overweight and difficult to lose weight and my periods began to get irregular...

went to gp who was not interested at all as i was not at that time interested in having children (at 19/20). he left it, i had some blood tests to check hormone levels and they came back normal.

then my period was 19 days late and i was convinced i was PG. i wasnt of course - after 4 POAS tests. but it shook me to thinking gosh, i really would like children.

so i went back to gp - by this time the hair had got a little worse. he did bloods again and a test to check if i was ovulating... both came back saying i was.

he wanted me to leave it again but i was more determined this time. told them i did want to have children.

he referred me to a specialist. more blood tests. hormone levels fine and again, tests showed i was ovulating. my periods by this time had gone back to normal completely (i am like clockwork)

they then referred me for an ultrasound. they showed enlarged ovaries but gp reckoned that could have been because i was due on.

referred me for an internal scan.

had it and the specialist diagnosed me there and then.

i am not on any meds, havent been back to docs since as at that particular time it was about 18months before my wedding so didnt want children right then and the facial hair was my main bug bear. they didnt offer me anything for it but suggested laser hair removal which i started last NOV and its really helped.

i need to get my arse in gear tho to get the gp to prescribe me metformin or something to now help with the weight loss and hopefully help with getting pg.
have also noticed my hair getting thinner. will be devastated if it gets worse...

its such a shitty disorder!!!
