Man on Facebook rejected friend request

I met a lovely new man 9 months ago, I'm in my early 40s. He has a one son who is in his 20s.
His son is such a lovely lad, well spoken, intelligant and I think a lot of him.
I'm always polite and checking he's ok on messenger and he lives away, and bought him an Easter egg etc, as he doesnt have a relationship with his own mum.
In added him as a friend on fb about 6 months ago and he only now he has rejected this.
Any ideas why? It's doesn't matter just strange.
