My Birth Story :)

Birth story As you know, I was booked in for induction on the Thursday due to being diagnosed with Obstetric Cholestasis. On the Wednesday night Tilly was up all night with a vomiting and diarrhoea bug so I spent my last night at home comforting her and washing bed linen! Because she had been poorly she didn't go to nursery which threw all of our plans in the air. I was already nervous but the thought of leaving her poorly was breaking my heart, especially since I wasn't sure when I was going to be home. Tilly miraculously recovered during the morning so my mum arrived to take her out for lunch and treat her which meant we could set off for the Hospital with no dramas. We arrived at 3pm and I was admitted and they explained about the process, which had changed slightly since I had Tilly. They now use propess which is a pessary, but it stays in for 24hrs rather than the pessary that had to be repeated every 6 hours. I was examined and found to be 2cm dilated, although not effaced enough to have my waters broken so they told me that they would give me the propess and check me again in 24hrs. Nothing else happened that night. The next morning I woke up to not so much as a twinge which was really disappointing as the other two girls who were induced at the same time were having regular contractions. Matt arrived at 11.30am so we went for a long walk around the hospital grounds, up and down three flights of stairs! I started to feel funny so we went back to the ward so I could lie down. It was visiting hours and the ward was really busy when I felt the urge to be sick. I was desperately trying to get Matts attention to pull my curtains round my bed and pass me a sick bowl but he was watching Top Gear with headphones in! Cue projectile vomiting all over my bed, my lovely new dressing gown, in my hair.... The midwives came to help tidy up and Matt had to go home to get me some clean pjs. I have never been as sick but the midwife said it was probably a good sign that things were starting to move along! They ran me a bath so I had a bit of a pamper until Matt came back. By the time I was examined again I was still only 2cm dilated but having contractions every 5 mins so they booked me onto delivery and said that I would be taken up as soon as they had a space. This was at 5pm. At 11pm we finally got the call to go up and I was so surprised at how calm I felt. The midwife went through my birth plan with me, the only thing i was insistent on was that I wanted an epidural if I had to go on the Syntocin drip after my bad experience with Tilly. midwife examined me (still 2cm!!) and told me she was going to break my waters so I demanded the G&A which worked wonders. After monitoring my contractions were coming along brilliantly but my heart rate and temperature were through the roof and they were concerned that I was dehydrated after being so ill earlier. My urine was also showing nitrates which indicated a UTI. I then had to be put on a drip to increase my fluids and they also put a line of paracetamol to try and stop my fever. I felt absolutely awful at this point, like I didn't have the energy to carry on. At 2am I was examined and was 4cm but my contractions had slowed, the midwife explained that I really needed the Syntocin drip to get my contractions back but that she had already spoken to the anaesthetist who was on his way to perform the epidural if that's what I still wanted. I felt so calm and in control because even though things weren't going to plan, my back up plan was in place and I was totally prepared. The epidural hurt much more than I remembered! Once that was in I started to feel sick again and my temp / heart rate shot through the roof again so they had to increase my fluids. I had three lines coming from me as well as the monitor! I managed to get some rest and was woken up by the midwife at 5am turning t

turning the baby warmer thingy on which I knew was a good sign! I started to cry out in pain, I felt like I had an elephant stood on my pelvis!! I panicked because I thought the epidural had stopped working but the mw explained that I had a different kind, it was like half an epidural where I could still move my legs and feel the pressure of baby, just not the contractions! She examined me and I was 9cm so told me to take in some gas and air and that I would be ready to push in an hour or so.

After 10 mins I was screaming that I needed to push so she examined me again and I was fully dilated. The pain of pushing is something I will never forget. I was crying hysterically because this is the point that it all started to go wrong with Tilly until the mw told me that I was wasting energy and that I needed to push my baby out very quickly.

After pushing for 30 mins, our baby arrived. Compared to last time it was so peaceful, just me, Matt and the midwife in the room. I asked Matt what sex the baby was....

    It's a.....oh my god it's a girl!!

    Me: really?

    Midwife: she's definitely a girl

We were both so shocked as we were both convinced she was a boy! It was so overwhelming we were both in floods of tears. Not with relief like we were with Tilly but total exhilaration! I couldn't believe that we had another gorgeous girl and I still have a massive beam on my face a week on image

The midwife handed me the gas and air whilst she gave me a 'couple' of stitches (I actually have a second degree tear so it felt like she was doing a bloody cross stitch). Matt had skin to skin and we thought we should probably name herimage I had Esme all along but he wasn't keen but when I mentioned it again he was so emotional he agreed and now loves it.

He was so brilliant, I feel like I've fallen in love with him all over again.

Esme is a total dream so far. She sleeps well, feeds well, I feel like a totally different woman to when I had Tilly. Those early days were so dark for me that I was scared that would happen again but I'm confident in what I'm doing this time. I don't feel like I'm playing mum anymore.

Finally, the itching has stopped! I have to go for blood tests in 6 weeks to check that the Cholestasis has gone and speak to a specialist about the chances of it happening again but that's it for me. Pre-eclampsia first time and Obstetric Cholestasis second time round has made that decision for me. It was only once i had given birth and felt so well again that i realise just how poorly I was those last two months. I'm lucky to have two gorgeous, healthy girls and it wouldn't be fair for me to put myself through another pregnancy.

The epidurals are weird aren't they? I had the same. It's a shame things didn't go quite according to plan but it sounds like you had quite a positive experience, except the part where it made you so sick. Congratulations again on another baby girl x
