My 20 week scan and a bit of stress
Hi ladies, well I had my 20 week scan on Friday - it was fantastic to see how much bubba had grown and it was v emotional. All was going well (despite baby not playing ball and continuing to somersault and squirm around!) and then they took a measurement that they said wasn't normal. The sonographer said the left ventricle in the brain was showing too much fluid - 11.4mm and the cut-off for normal is 10mm. She ruled out spina bifida as the spine was fine, but mentioned the possibility of hydrocephelus (fluid on the brain) which can have all sorts of ramifications. She referred us to see their fetal specialist who wanted to scan me again today - so a bit of a worrying weekend was in order waiting to see him. Anyway, saw him this afternoon and the measurements are absolutely normal - fluid at 7mm - phew!!!! He explained that measurements can be affected by the angle of the baby at the time of the scan but he got a perfect 'round' disectional view and was happy with the results. They took some blood from me, just to check there wasn't any underlying virus during early pg - but I feel assured that all is well. Such a relief - it was so exciting at the first scan only to be really worried for a few days - could do without that stress. Now I feel on cloud nine again and only left wishing I could have a strong gin and tonic to relax!!! Hope all well with you ladies xx

omg, I can imagine how worrying that must have been for you, and how awful your weekend must have been. But I am so glad that everything is okay, no wonder you are relieved. Have you seen your consultant yet? What is her/his plan for your pregnancy - are you going to get additional scans? ARe they ok with you taking aspirin? When have you been advised to stop taking aspirin? Are you worried about stopping Aspirin? I was told at the end of 34 weeks, but am a bit worried about stopping incase my body lets my baby down. I saw the REgistrar instead of the consultant on 5th July and they are going to do growth scans at 28 and34 weeks because dd was a small baby. Seeing the consultant on 12th july when I have my next scan. Consultant wrote to me to say she was going to write to prof regan for advice on looking after my pg.
Hi S-evans - Yes I saw my consultant at 12 wks and she had received an update letter from Prof Regan so she was fully briefed on my various conditions. Prof Regan suggested aspirin up to 32 wks but my consultant wants to continue with aspirin from 32wks but on a half dose (75mg) daily up until delivery due to it helping reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia which I had with my first. I'm quite relieved cos - like you am a bit nervous about dropping the aspirin all together. No mention of extra scans for me, they are just going to test the blood flow to the placenta at each scan to check for the on-set of pre-eclampsia. I don't think there are any defined plans for the rest of the pregnancy - but I'm seeing my consultant again next week so will find out then if there is anything else they want to do. Good luck for the 12th xx
omg hun what a stressful weekend you've had! I'm so glad all is fine though xx
