Too much Amniotic fluid - scared!

Hi, I was told at a growth scan on Monday that I have increased levels of Amniotic Fluid - I am 30+4. The consultant told me that it could be nothing but has arranged a Glucose Tolerance Test next week as a symptom of Gestational Diabetes is increased fluid (baby measured on the large side but within the 'acceptable' limit so doc not concerned). Of course, I did the wrong thing - and looked up high levels of amniotic fluid on the internet. I found out it is uncommon and there could be a problem with the baby's swallowing. I'm now a bit scared! Has anyone else had experience of this?

Hi try not to worry. my lo is now nearly 8 months old and when i was 34 weeks i was measuring 40!! sent for scan and i too was told i had a very high amount of fluid and that my baby was going to be huge!!
i was taken in a few days before my due date as they didnt want me going overdue becuase of these 2 things. they broke my waters and there was a hell of a lot!! my oh couldnt believe how much there was. the midwife said there was much more than they thought there was so monitored baby more. when he was finally born he was perfect. nothing wrong and he only weighed 8lb 6ozs. some may say this is big but not compared to the 10lbs they were saying he was!!

i know what its like to look things up on the net as i did it everytime i heard a new word or the drs/midwifes said anything!!
try not to worry too much.

I had this too with my last baby and measured 4 ft around by the end. Still went over by 9 days and was told I couldn't have a home birth as there are a few risks but otherwise no probs from it at all. I asked if some could be drained but they said it would just come back !
    Try not to worry x

    Hiya hun,
I was the exact same as you had a growth scan at 30 wks and then every 2 weeks from then on to keep an eye on it. Apparently if your just having a big baby that can explain it and its not always a sign something is wrong. I would imagine they will keep a close eye on you though (woo hoo at more scans image ) In the end I had a c section coz they were saying Holly was big and lots of fluid so please please dont worry.
The one thing I was told though was that if my waters broke I had to get down on all fours and call an ambulance as there is a higher chance of a cord prolapse and that I might have gone into labour early because of the weight of the fluid but as it happened I didn't. Im sure they will tell you all that though if they think its a cause for concern, take care of youself and try not to worry xxx

Hi I just wanted to reply, I am 37 weeks tomorrow and I have carried too much fluid throughout the pregnancy, had extra scans and the glucose test which came back clear but they still wanted me to cut down on sugar. They have diagnosed me with mild polyhydramnios. Anyhow after a lot of worrying at my last scan last week my fluid levels are still way too high but even though this is my third my babies head as engaged therefore the risks linked with the condition are minimised. Like Hollys mummy I was told to ring an ambulance if my waters broke due to the risks but know I should be ok as the head is in the way!

Its very good that they have picked up on it and can moniter you. I know its easier said than done but try not to worry too much as these things can even correct themselves. At all my other scans my baby was measuring really large but in these last few weeks his growth has slowed due to the change in diet and he weighed around 6 and a half lb at last scan so even that they are not worried about as my youngest was born at 36+5 weighing 7lb.

Anyway I just wanted to reply to reassure that these things can have good outcomes. xx

Hi all, just joined this forum new becos of this topic. i think in my own case it was not diagnose and it was my first pregnancy and everything was ok nd baby was fine until the night my water broke, alot of water gush out and i dont kn what to do ,no labour, not even a single pain.all of a sudden my cord came out and we called the ambulance service and i went straight to have emergency c-section but the must painful thing of all is that my baby was born(38wks+6) poorly bcos of lack of oxygen and had alot of complcation including cerebralpalsy and she spent all her life in NICU and peadiatric unit, she died after 4months of sufferring and fighting to live.I am happy at least i could search and find out the root of the problem.

To all mum,i am happy dat u know wat to do and no worries knowledge is power.

I too am nervous and waiting. I am 28 and 5. I have been seeing a fetal speacialist since the begging due to some other disorders I found with this pregnancy. Weird this is my 7th child and supposedly I have had all these disorders my whole life and has complicated every pregnancy and they are just now finding it. Anyways my levels since 21 weeks have been measuring on the high side. I have a scan every friday and today they said My levels are 25 + and the baby is on the 70 th percentile for measurment he ways 2lb 14oz. He is not a big baby. I don't have diabetes. I am also measuring 36 weeks and only supposed to be 28. So I am confused anybody can help please share.

I had this with baby no.4 - I was told too much waters wasn't too much of an issue, just that there was more of a risk of breach or the cord coming out before the baby which can be a problem. I was told not to go too far from the hospital so I made sure I was within 30 mins, which was dull but do-able! Like a previous comment I was told to ring an ambulance if my waters broke - but I knew this was unlikely as for my labours the waters going are one of the last things to happen - babies come VERY quickly after that! Too much fluid means bubs has more room to move around which created a minor issue for dd's birth as all that squiggling around meant she was able to get the cord wrapped around her neck twice - midwife was very good and didn't tell me, just told me not to push while she unravelled her! Otherwise uneventful birth bar the massive GUSH as my waters went - oh's face was a picture! I have heard it can mean bigger babies but dd was only 8lb.

A friend has just had similar experience with too much fluid - she did end up being kept in hospital on and off for about a month. She was induced last week for a lovely 10lber!!

^ Same here im 33 weeks and measuring 37 so I have to go in for a ultrasound next week to find out whats going on. This happened with my 3rd son and found out it was nothing, that he was just stretched out when the doctor measured me that day. My doctor also mentioned it could be too much fluid but i guess i wont know til next week... I passed my glucose test at 28 weeks but it was close. How did your tests come out Charlene?

I was done a scan when I was 22 and told that I had increased amniotic fluid as well. This sent me worrying as the doc told me there is nothing that can be done and we have to wait and pray all is well. I realised I was growing fast but the first doc I saw kept telling me since my earlier two children were big then that was alright. Well I can say I was worried when I read in the net about dangers of increased fluid. Now Im 27 weeks. Well if there are mothers out there who have had such scares but had safe deliveries and healthy babies, share with us your experiences.

Initially I had been informed that I have excessive amniotic fluid which like most of us sent me into a panic. But now Im 34 weeks and went for another scan just 2 days ago. I made sure I got all my questions answered by the doctor. I asked all these stories about the fluid status and all. Luckin]ly the doctor said it is now normal and normally he had expected it t normalise as the pregnancy progresses. He said I should not worry. He also said the greatest worry is normally when the fluid is too little and true my friend had lots of trouble with inadequate fluid and poor lady lost her baby. With my friends predicament you cna understand why Ii was so worried. However, remedy is there if you seek medical advice early enough,
