The length of the first phase (pre-ovulatory) can vary within a woman's cycle - but the luteal phase usually remains the same. Ovulation can be delayed by a number of factors....stress, illness, medication, heavily increased activity, etc. Even if you do not ovulate around the normal time period - in knowing the length of your luteal phase you are aware of exactly when your menstrual period is due. This discounts the belief of those say they always have "late periods". If they were charting they would realize that actually it was just their ovulation being delayed and they were not late at all. A normal luteal phase is approximately 12 - 16 days and needs to be at least 10 days for implantation to take place. A short luteal phase can cause fertility problems making it difficult for a women to get pregnant.

The luteal phase is the time from ovulation to the next period. It is typically 10-16 days in length, but it is usually fairly consistent in length for an individual woman, differing by no more than 1 or 2 days from cycle to cycle.

I thought the luteal phase was not supposed to vary. Why does my chart show that my luteal phase varies from cycle to cycle?

The luteal phase (the time between ovulation and menstruation) does not usually vary much from cycle to cycle, while the follicular phase (the time between menstruation and ovulation) can vary considerably. A variance of more than a day or two in your luteal phase usually means that ovulation may have occurred earlier or later than your chart indicates on one or more cycles and you may need to make some adjustments to your charts. You can use the manual override feature or the ovulation detection tuners to make adjustments.

When you get your pos OPK is it a dark line? Just because the month i used ov sticks i got faint pos on CD9, 10, 11 dark pos of CD12 and faint on cd13 and 14. I was also testing twice a day.

I understand from research on here that the only pos you take notice of is when the 2nd line is AS DARK as the control line.

I must admit i have read somewhere that your luteal phase NEVER changes but will see if i can find any resources to back that up!!

    Good luck lovey xx

Oh crap - hubby might just shoot me! The line was dark, but not as dark as the control line - oh no oh crap oh no! I can't believe I've been such an idiot!!!

I feel so so much better thank you ladyinpink - I'll read those links etc. properly tonight too.

Oh Joo have a hug, lets not tell hubby!!!

I haven't used OPK since that 1st month as it my first month off pill and my cycle was a bit loopy but if you really wanted to monitor it seriously i have seen loads of ladies in the american forums swear by fertility friend. It's free to join and prompts you to temp/record your symptoms/record your bd etc - i have been meaning to start mine for ages, by recording my symptoms it might stop me asking myself "did i have this last month" haha

Anyways i am waffling...... http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ is the website.

Oh and also here is a link to another forum i frequently look at and i managed to find a thread on the luteal phase thing for you.
