Trying to conceive after depo injection

Me and my fiance would love to start our own family. I was on the depo injection for almost 3 years and had my last depo shot in October 2011. I have had no periods at all whilst on the depo injection and my period has still not arrived last week i had my first day of bleeding which only lasted one day and was barely a period. Im hoping my period returns soon so i can monitor my cycle and ovulation to help concive.  A friend has suggested folic acid or pregnacare to help but should i wait until i have my first real period? any advice would be appreciated as i cannot get a Dr's appt until 2 weeks time x
