48hr newborn -- breathing "too quickly"

Our beautiful baby was Born less than 48 hours ago, and has been given a clean bill of health with the exception to its "breathing".

To summarize quickly... no labor complications other than they couldn't tell when the water/membrane broke

Wife is strep b positive at the time of delivery and went through antibiotics... but due to unknown membrane, they are not 100% sure if this did or did not get to the baby.

Baby has passed all examinations and blood tests including:

Infections

Metabolic disorder

Syphilis

Doctors have checked reflexes, whether any water on the lungs, temp, appetite, and janauce.

So far everything is well within parameters except for breathing which ranges from 55-75 at any given time (at rest to crying)

Now the docs think everything is "good" but to keep an eye out for any progressions good or bad for the next 24 hours+

As we're not out of the waters yet... its a bit nerve-racking but we're tolerating.

So far he's been eating at least every 2 hours and is playful and alert (when awake).

Our friend who's RN says though, that fast breathing is a "symptom" of something and is surprised we were discharged.

any ideas though?
