Go on the Pill while Beastfeeding?

My wife is current breastfeeding our 6 week old baby boy. The doctor told us that we can have intercourse now and use a condom for few weeks. I would like to know if my wife can go on the pill. She is not producing to much milk, maybe 4 oz in 5 or 6 hours. not use it that is a lot but we have to give our baby formula since he is still hungry.
