Storing formula on the go

Hey there, I was wondering - I need to take with me an amount of formula that is too large for a powder dispenser, yet carrying a can is a bit bulky. Is it possible to store formula in a plastic container? Do I need to sterilize it first? How long can I use the separately stored formula IYO?
