Amazon gears up for holiday customers

Amazon keeps its fulfillment center staff numbers in the U.S. around 20,000 all year long. During Christmas, however, the company will be hiring 50,000 seasonal employees to help fulfill orders. Amazon expects a huge increase in the number of orders it expects this year.

If you add in part-time workers, its total staff numbers around 69,000 globally as of last June, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Chance of becoming permanent

After the holidays are over, employees can expect an opportunity to become permanent workers with a 30 percent pay increase, according to Dave Clark of Amazon.

Clark said:

"Temporary associates play a critical role in meeting increased customer demand during the holiday season, and we expect thousands of temporary associates will stay on in full-time positions."

About the Holiday shopping season

The Friday after Thanksgiving, which has come to be referred to as "Black Friday," kicks off the holiday shopping season. It is the most popular day of the year for retailers, so they are getting their ducks in a row.

Retailers have been hoping that this year’s holiday season will be full of shopper since the economy seems to be improving. That is why more retailers are hiring holiday help this year.

The National Retail Federation explained that there is going to be a rise in the number of seasonal workers employed this year at 623,000, a rise from last year’s 607,000 hired.

There are likely to be a lot of workers in major retailers, such as Kohl’s with 52,700 employees, Walmart with 50,000 additional employees, Target with 90,000 additional workers, and Macy’s with 80,000 additional employees.

Previous tax break

Amazon promised to produce 18 fulfillment centers this year to be able to add jobs to the economy, according to the Wall Street Journal. As of June, 18 of them were already opened. This is Amazon’s way of avoiding taxes a little more. Normally, a person can go to Amazon and buy a product without paying any taxes. Counties that have been pressuring Amazon to change this are getting the brand new distribution centers, which means more jobs for the economy.

Amazon has only 40 distribution centers in the country, according to the LA Times, but that fact is argued by the Wall Street Journal that claims 69 exist across the country.
