20 week scan - told baby was deformed, and then told they weren't. What do i do?

hello there everyone,

just need a bit of advice really. I recently had my 20 week scan for my first baby, after about 15 mins of laying there with a full bladder and being nervous the sonographer told me there was a problem and that there was a 90% chance the baby was deformed as on the scan she saw the babies head next to the stomach. She then proceeded to tell me about referring me to London and specialists. I was completely numb just laying there so I asked to go to the toilet and then she could carry on. After I came back she carried on scanning then told me that the baby was actually fine. The sonographer didn't ask for a second opinion. I work at the hospital I hadn't my scan done at and the lady was very apologetic but I'm being told I should make a complaint and was just wondering what you ladies would do in that situation. Thanks for any replies

I'd start with a second opinion as that should give you piece of mind. Then yes I'd put in a formal complaint I know it's difficult because you work there but to be told 90% is a big claim that she shouldn't be making

She will have taken pics as she went so if she was doing her job correctly then an investigation will show that but I'm assuming if you went to the loo was she trying to say you emptying your bladder changed the image?

I'd be asking for a second opinion regardless of her justification but that seems a pretty big claim to make and then to change her mind without a full explanation would have me worried.

Hello, sorry for late reply. And thank you both for replying. I think I might have a chat with the midwife and see what she thinks. It's all very worrying! I keep being told I need to enjoy being pregnant but when things like this happen it doesn't really help. Thank you once again for replying.

No its totally understandable. Pregnancy isn't all cake and sandwiches that people think it is. For me it's constant worry and it takes a real physical toll on my body so it's not good when extra weight is added to your mind.

Speak to your midwife and explain your concerns and hopefully you can get a second opinion
