O/T Voting in the general election

I am a disgrace to women and have never voted in my life. I use the age old excuse "i dont really understand it all" but this yr I feel it may be important to make my choice.

So im after some advice, how do I make an informed choice? where can I find information on the main things each group aim to do if in power??

This is the real reason I dont vote becasue I just dont know where to access the information on the main points in their policies. I have no idea what any of the parties are propsing to do but this year I want to know and I want to make an informed choice

Thanks in advance XX

if you're serious about finding out as much as poss I'd say wait til the candidates in your constituency are announced then approach their offices direct with questions on topics that matter to you. That way you get their individual priorities aswell as the party view.

They should put information through the doors closer to the time but gems is right about having a look at each candidate. I didn't vote at the last election we had here(local ones) but I think now more than ever it is important given the situation the country finds itself in.

hi, here is the links to the general policies of each political party, well the main parties that come to mind anyway, u can also find on these web pages drafts of the manifestos. obv they won't all stick to all their policies and manifestos, unfortunately, thats what makes it so hard to know who to vote for. apeak to any door to door canvassers too, altho i've enevr had the pleasure of a door to door canvasser myself, obv my area and previous areas don't think its appropriate or something, or get in touch with the loacl labour club/ conservative club etc, they normally hold 'rallies' and speeches etc hth xx

I'm really confused! Like LoobyLou, I have no idea when it comes to politics and, at 26, I think it's about time I started learning so that I can vote when the time comes.
But.. having just looked at the link above for the Lib Dems, I noticed they have said they will cut class sizes for children aged 5-7 down to around 15 per class, that's half than the limit now and all the schools in my area are already way over subscribed so I don't understand how the gov would find the money/space to double the amount of classes there are now!
Also, they have said they will scrap tuition fees for full and part time Uni courses, but how is that going to be paid for? They don't tell you :\?

    taxes! x

Yes that's what I thought but they have also set they will cut taxes for low income people so they must be planning to charge higher paid people a fortune on taxes?!!!
Looking at all the links above, I haven't found any party that I would be completely happy with voting for, they all have policies that I don't agree with, so how do you decide?

since its FPTP why dont you maybe think about having to use your vote tactically? It depends on your area and the power of the candidates in Westminster too though.

thats what i said in an earlier reply, who have to remember who is actualy going to stick to a 'policy'. every government so far has said they will lower taxes, improve schools, improve nhs etc etc and they never actually do. i think thats why no one votes anymore, because ur just having to vote for the lesser of evils. it all boils dopwn to who do u think will do what they've promised once they're in, or who has the mostthings that u think will actually happen that will help u, iyswim?

the first thing they mess around with is schools, as everyone has experiences of being in school so it's one that gets people's attention. although all they ever do is introduce old systems / ideas with new names! it is so frustrating... like sending some children to college on some days during the week to learn a trade and having some children take their exams the year, sometimes even two years, early to get them on the alevels faster.

Well isnt that like the old system with secondary moderns and grammar schools and kids leaving at 14 to learn a trade? the only issue now is with grammar schools they specialised in dealing with high ability children and the secondary moderns would be better equiped to give access for all children to what they needed, rather than what was expected. of course, this system wasnt perfect as 11 is too soon and it would work much better in year 9. but honestly does anyone think the top or the botton children of any comp now will achieve their full potential? because the vast majority dont. we need a government that stops assuming all children are the same and need the same. grr. of course, we also need parents who realise school is for educating their children, not child care and not to teach them how to tie their shoe laces, ties and use a knife and fork at the age of 11!!!!!!! or manners and nything else matthew wright thinks is the teacher's responsibility rather than the parents. rant rant rant rant rant! image

and the second thing they will mess with is the NHS.

    Amen to that!!!!
as a primary teacher i am so fed up of the tabloids screaming about it being the job of schools to teach children any and every little thing! Now its our job to make sure children eat properly too... i don't know why the government doesn't just hand them straight to us from birth!!
    gggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
