Blinking and sniffing! ARGH!

My 6 year old girl has had a horrid habit of chewing the inside of her lips, causing giant blisters. We managed to get her to stop that, but as a result she's now started blinking (as if she's trying to move something with her mind, if you know what i mean?) and sniffing constantly.
Now all my mum friends tell me to ignore it and it'll go awat, but by god it's driving me mad. Any wise words???
