I'd just get a few to begin with. I barely used any with F and R - mainly just had one under their head in the cot so I didn't have to change all the bedding if they were sick but I got through loads with T as he was so sicky.
We had around 40 for #1 and that was about right. With #2 we have 36 (got 3 packs of 12 from Mothercare when they were on 3 for 2) and it is way too many as she is not sicky.
Like BW said I dyed them, for #1 I dyed them bright pink and with #2 she has purple. #1 still uses them as a comfort blanket and as we have so many we never have to worry if she loses one which was why we encouraged that as her comfort rather than a teddy.
